Lion + Tiger = LIGER! Freckles was rescued from a failed backyard sanctuary in mississippi Dec 2008. 16 year old Freckles is one of the oldest Ligers around but she is one of the most recent arrivals to Big Cat Rescue. At the time of her rescue we could see a big hole in her jowl, and feared that it would lead to her demise, but she was in such bad shape that we just couldn’t risk knocking her out to get a better look. Being a cranky old cat, she wasn’t about to let us get a good look any other way either. She was given antibiotics in case it was just an injury, but now that she has become more calm in her new setting we can see that the problem stems from several broken teeth. Caged cats will often break off their teeth trying to chew their way out of their prison cells and when she was left behind to die in Mississippi she probably did just that.
The dental work was completed on Freckles without any problems and she as made a full recovery. Let’s hope that the dental as taken away her pain and she will have no more problems in the future.
This procedure cost Big Cat Rescue a lot of money so if you would like to help us pay for the cost of her treatment please visit: http://www.bigcatrescue.org/donate.htm

all tubby cats have bellies that hang. lions tend to work harder to eat and survive than other cats and so they usually look leaner.

It might be more …
It might be more prominent with Freckles as she was overweight when we rescued her, since then she has been on a healthy diet and has shed some pounds. But the big cats have this excess there for stretching and leaping also.

Yes he is, …
Yes he is, unfortunately breeding these cats is a cruel practice, since they suffer from so many health problems, they shouldn’t exist. But people like Hercule’s owner breed them to exploit and make money.

425 lbs.? That seems like it would be light for a fully grown liger, since many of them are bigger than tigers? But then, she was starving where she came from…..poor Freckles!
