about 3 weeks ago (friday) i discovered a lump on the right side of my neck i had no other symthons but this mystery lump i went straight to my doc who gave me an examination and told me it was a swollen lymph node, prob a viral infection from previous dental work! and to go see my dentist, the following day i had a high fever and headache, i also felt very tired, i didn’t feel like eating ne food for 2 days and my mussels all over my body were acking i also had a very mild sore throat which was only there for a day and also a rash over my chest and stomach which also only lasted a day, i booked an appointment with a different doctor on monday told her of my symthons and told me it was probably a common cold or possibly glandular fever! neither doctors told me to get a blood test done! the lump was big about the size of half a golf ball but seems to have gone down abit since then, however the lump is still there?? painless and hard and i feel fine! im worried i have something more serious? should i go back to the doc adn get a blood test? or how long until this lump goes away? i have no other lumps ne where else as i have been checking regularly in case other lymph nodes have swollen! the lump doesn’t seem to move around much and is more fixed to one spot just under my jaw and its not my gland coz i can feel it next to the lump
btw I am 22 and a non smoker
Try not to worry so much! Yes it it scary to find large lump like that but:
Swollen gland very common after any illness or infection! The doctor told you it was a lymph node right? He knows what he talking about. He can tell by feeling it and the location that is a simple swollen node. If there were something else, a growth on it he would notice.Cancer nodes feel much different than common swollen node to a doctor.
I have same exact as you on right side of my neck. I have had it for years. It always there and I can feel it as lump. About size of small lime.Sometimes they stay this way. Sometimes they shrink little. It not much to worry. Very common. My daughter have them too.
If it becomes too swollen(Like when you catch cold it swell up again) you can always ask Dr to aspirate it to drain a little fluid.
Or if you are SO convinced it something else, request biopsy.
But you young girl! Is nothing more than lymph node.
Is very scary for you but doctor see this all the time. So you may tink he rush you out of office without more investigation, but they KNOW where lymph nodes are located and what they should feel like.

if it were cancer you would be near death before your gland swelled that much. its prolly a viral infection. my mother has small cell lung cancer that spread to two lymph nodes….. her nodes didnt swell.

i have recently had glandular fever/ bacterial tonsillitis, and i too had lots of these lumps. i’ve also had them since birth, so through my experiences, i don’t think it’s anything significant. they go up and down and i have one behind my ear that rose to about half a golf ball, but it’s gone down now. if it was glandular fever, you neck would be the same width as you’r head with the swelling of your glands haha. through my experience of when they have risen, it may be to do with stress, which is when mine are largest. hope that helped? probably not haha

Wow. What kind of doctors are you seeing?
A "glandular fever" diagnosis? There is no such thing.
"Viral infection from previous dental work" makes little sense either.
Are you in the United States?
It sure would help to know your age?
What blood test would you like to have?
If you are worried about a lymphoma, only a biopsy will decide that.
The key test here is the "test of time" – watch this closely and proceed to biopsy only if it grows.
I suspect you are young – which makes Hodgkin’s lymphoma the more likely concern – if this is anything other than residual adenopathy from an old bacterial infection in the head and neck region.
Added note – age 22 is what I suspected. Low risk of lymphoma other than Hodgkin’s disease. There were only 4400 women diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the U.S. in 2008. Not sure why I have two thumbs down. My information is medically correct. Follow-up is the key here. We don’t biopsy every enlarged cervical (neck) lymph node in 22 year olds unless there is clinical reason for suspicion of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Your doctor who knows your entire medical history and has examined this node plus all other lymph nodes areas is the best person to decide about a biopsy.

It seems by your description that you are likely to have some kind of oral infection, could be bacterial/viral.
Why the chances of cancer are less and that of infection are high:
a. Commonly a swelling which is a cancer does not decrease in size.
b. You have described the location below the jaw, which is a common location for lymphnode to enlarge secondary to any infection in the mouth/tonsils.
c. The fever with headache and bodyache, with tiredness and lack of appetite for 2 days only, are more suggestive of infection rather than cancer.
These symptoms when associated to cancer are likely to persist for a much longer period of time say weeks to months.
d. Your age is again not a common age for cancer, though cancer can occur at any age.
In case your lump fails to go down and keeps enlarging and new lumps do come up, you should go to a near by doctor and ask for a proper check up, and relevant diagnosis.
With the doctor when face to face you can raise and clear your doubts.

Ive had simular lump and doctors dont normally get over concerned
for what its worth I dabble in natural remmedies and have had a high success rate ,with my self and this is what I found .
For mine I used VITAMIN C in 1000g range non acidic 4 a day taken 2morn 2 evening consistantly for 5 days optimizing the Vit C level in your body eliminates a lot of toxins and impurities through your blood
you cant overdose on it your body expels what you dont need just
4 keeps it optimal .

I agree with SpreeDog. He is right on everything. The only thing I would like to add is this. I had a lump in my neck, I went to my doctor who thought it was a lymph node. It was on my neck for a year and I got REALLY REALLY REALLY worried. Turns out, I had a non cancerous tumor in my neck. A ear/nose/throat doctor cut it out in his office, sent it out for biopsy and called me days later to tell me everything was fine. I have a large scar on my neck, HOWEVER, " I’M ALIVE, I’M ALIVE ". I hope everything turns out for you. Spreedog is right though, listen to him, he knows what he’s talking about. Thumbs up for you SPREEDOG.
