Is becoming a dentist worth it? First year dental salaries pay nearly the same as first year pharmacists and considering that dental school is MUCH more costly and lengthier, the only thing that justifies the extra debt and school from a financial standpoint is that with dentistry, you can open your own business with a major growth in income.
Dentistry seems interesting to me. I would enjoy fixing teeth, making crowns, applying veneers, invisalign, and bleaching teeth. I can deal with drilling and cleaning, however less enjoyable. I just wonder how hard is it to make money doing dentistry these days? It seems to me that many city and suburban markets are overly saturated with dentists, especially in my home state of Florida, making it more competitive.
I’m just so confused as I am starting college this fall and planning on taking the medical sciences and prerequisites and for dental school. I wonder if dentistry is for me? I first considered psychiatry, but ruled this out as I dread the idea of being 30+ and starting my career. Secondly, I decided on pharmacy, then ruled this out as I would not enjoy the classes. I would much rather have hands on activities. As most things in pharmacy school are not tangible, I think I would have a harder time learning.
That being said, I would LOVE to be a dentist, but I find myself easily discouraged and hard to commit. I have been told business is a better degree to look into if you are interested in the money, but I have no interest in the business world; being that it seems very cutthroat and unstable. I would much rather make money in the medical field, as dentistry becomes business when you open your own practice.
Any thoughts? I would like to hear from anyone working toward the same goal as me, or anyone that is currently a dentist. What do you love or hate about your job? If you could do it over again, would you? And most importantly, what would you have wanted to know about the career before you became a dentist? Thanks.
You know you were not meant to be a dentist when………..
1. The idea of the salary appeals more to you then the job.
2. You do not take care of your own teeth.
3. You only THINK that you would like the job, to be a dentist, you must KNOW that you will like the job.
So, just ask yourself those three questions, and if ANY apply to you, then look for a different career.
I myself would LOVE to be a pharmacist, it has my passion for chemistry and people written all over it. I will likely be pursuing that.

I recently got a job with BPI Dental, and we specialize in web marketing, as I stated above. We cold call dental offices and offer them our services to help them bring more patients into their practice, using things like search engine optimization, social networking, and custom web design.
I.. am a terrible telemarketer, from what I can tell at least. I know I am new and need to give myself time to adjust and learn, but I would really appreciate tips from anyone on how to be more.. persuasive, I suppose. I just really don’t know how to market things to people over the phone.
I’ve never done telemarketing, and I can’t say it’s really my cup of tea, sitting in a cubicle with a phone glued to my ear, but it’s a job, and I want to do my utmost to succeed and earn my pay.
Again, any sort of advice, tricks, all of this would be extremely helpful.
If you treat it like a job you will not get the results try not to put pressure on yourself result will come when you are relaxed and carefree. I have been cold calling for about 15 years practice your pitch or scpript then throw it in the bin. Chat to people try and develop a relationship with your client, treat people like human beings they are less likely to be aggressive towards you.

try and get some commitment from them at the end phone call back,email follow up,
Keep the whole thing as short as possible clients are not interested in listening to the life history of your company, Chat about what they do what they intend to do with their company,
Then at the end make sure you ask the killer question would that be something you would be interested in doing, or a close similar focused around the product
Get your call rates up telesales in numbers game the more you speak to the more chance of getting the sales you have

Hi, I am thinking about dental school, but I want to work part time in my future job. I know some of you would advise me to become a dental hygienist, but from what I’ve heard, the market is overcrowded and it’s easy to lose your job due to the recession. That’s why I’m thinking about dentistry, but I’d really like to work part time. I know it’s going have a toll on my salary, but I’m in Europe and so I’m going to be out of dental school without any debt whatsoever. Can I make enough money to pay the rent of my practice and be comfortably poor with part time dentistry? Will someone even hire me on a part time week? How many dentists are working part time? Any experiences will be greatly appreciated.
Dentistry is actually a great field to go into part time.
Many dentists own a practice with a few other dentists, and each works a couple days a week. The rent gets paid, and each dentist goes home with a nice paycheck. Check it out, most dental offices will list several dentists.
I noticed you mentioned a "toll on your pay" working part time. As a part time dentist, I can assure you that you will still be making a lot more money than the average person.
