  • Am i over thinking this..?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

Well today i had a to job shadow at dental office and the dentist that i shadowed was my teacher’s dentist (she set the whole thing up for me)…so he performed a tooth extraction (pulling of the tooth) and after he was done he just got up and went to the little break room..i was really fascinated by the whole procedure and after it was over the dental assistant came in and talked to the patient about how long it would take for it to heal etc..so she basically answered all of my questions that i wanted to ask and i also asked one of the assistants what one machine was..and she told me that it was an electrical hand tool…and then the secretary came and told me that my mom was in the front waiting for me so she could bring me to school…so i went into the break room and he asked me if i enjoyed myself or something like that and i said i did and then he was telling one of the people that worked there that i was just looking over his shoulder not fazed by the blood and everything and he was saying that when he first saw that he was nauseous… then he asked me if i had any questions and i said no…he kind of looked shocked when i said that..then i said "well i mean i basically new what you were doing" (it wasn’t rocket science..he just pulling someones tooth)..and then i said my mom used to be a dental assistant so i basically new what was going on…(well i said something like that) then he asked me if i was going to come back and i said yes and then i left because my mom was waiting..(sigh) sooo the question is was it bad that i didnt have a question to ask him…because for some reason i feel really bad..and i told my mom about it and she said that im my own worst critic and that i stress my self over little things…which is kindof true…but i cant help it…and my teacher always tells us to ask questions and she would have a fit if we didnt…please no negative comments thank you!!

Hahahah I’ve done that before. I think he expected you to have questions since your still learning but sometimes you take in so much that its hard to process it all at once, let alone come up with a question. Even if you knew everything that was going on you should have just said "Im still trying to process it all, and even though im somewhat familiar with what was going on, I’m sure sooner than later I’ll have a ton of questions to ask" I honestly don’t think you did anything bad. I wouldn’t worry about it, sometimes you just don’t have a question plain and simple. Next time make some up if you really have to.

  • How do I know if the article is about perfect competition in economy?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

The project is about perfect competition and we are to create a thin book about this concept. The concept that we’ve picked is about perfect competition in economics. But how to know if the particular article is about perfect competition?

In perfect competition, no one earns any excess profits, there are no fixed costs, and moving in and out of the industry is costless. There are actually no examples of perfect competition in real life, but I would look for examples where people can pick up and drop their businesses without much planning, and where they don’t have a lot invested in the business. These are likely to be individuals or at most small groups of people, since once you start coordinating larger groups, there are significant overhead costs involved. It’s not going to be easy, there are few businesses that don’t require some initial investment to start, but you might be able to find something that gets close. Good luck!

  • Why is it that so many people ‘defend’ dentists and orthodontists from ever possibly doing anything wrong?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

I see a constantly increasing trend nowadays where a dentist screws up somehow, the patient gets mad and then other people that the patient talks to say that the patient "shouldn’t blame the dentist" because of this and that reason.

So, with that being said. I went to my general dentist a while back, when I felt that I was in a better position to fix my crooked teeth that I had since I was a little child. I knew the dentist that I went to couldn’t put braces or anything on, but I went for a general cleaning and for a couple of fillings. When he learned I was interested in ortho, of course, they let out a "Great!!" as if they were going to get paid for something. He gave me a couple of local area orthodontists. The orthodontist went through all of this rant for about 30 minutes. He put down celebrities, bashed on how x celebrity is missing teeth, went through the typical Jay Leno conversation and even dared to compare my case to Jay Leno…which it is not anywhere close to that. With another family member in the room with me, this crazy orthodontist told me that I would need to have about a month off from work (I don’t think even he could do that, himself – NO company will let you do that), wanted me to get metal braces, spend a week in the hospital so they could break my jaw and do this and that. Why? All because I have a tiny little difference between my bottom jaw and top jaw. The bottom jaw is slightly more pronounced than the top. So I basically have a slight prognathism/cross-bite. When the orthodontist told me that I would be buying a "basically be buying mini Lexus"…I never returned to his office to go beyond the basic consultation. Of course, he said, "The only person who I know of who does that kind of procedure is a friend of mine that I went to Emory University with…"

I’ve noticed that doctors, dentists and orthodontists seem to "stick together" and recommend their friends from school, claiming that there is no one else. I called my general dentist who referred me to that fruitcake orthodontist, and he actually agreed with the orthodontist. I asked if there was ANY other alternative to the jaw surgery/metal braces, and he said there wasn’t. The dentist sent me the information of other orthodontists, because he said "that would hopefully make me feel better about getting the procedure."

What I did, instead, was consult with a local dental center that does Invisalign and cosmetic dentistry. Something the orthodontist didn’t tell me about, because he doesn’t even do that and of course he wanted my money to put metal braces on at his office only…apparently with a little spiff by recommending his ‘friend’ from his former college. Surprise…the new general dentist/cosmetic dentist at the dental center said that yes, I did qualify for Invisalign. I got my impressions, and will have them back in a matter of weeks.

Why is it that dentists and orthodontists are such liars and cover up for one another on a frequent basis? I feel like I’m going to a car garage when I go to some of them…you ask for an oil change and they look around and find every freaking OTHER problem…and they shouldn’t have even had their nose looking for such a thing when it’s not what you asked. I do not feel this way with my current dentist, now…and my teeth will be straight in 2 years or less, via trays that I can remove to brush and floss…and my jaws will not be cut up by metal. But I think of all of the countless people who are told by orthodontists that they need metal braces, and the orthodontists seem to be refusing to learn anything about Invisalign, so that they can keep their business discreet and lie to people that metal braces are the only way.

Yet someone will reply to this with some fake, cop-out answer as to why the orthodontist and dentist stuck up for one another. Why do people ‘defend’ such people? The common answer to such a question is, "They went to school for x years to get a medical degree, so they know what they are talking about and you should listen to them." Apparently they didn’t. I didn’t go to college after high school and I have worked my way up in life, and I had the smarts to realize they were full of it, college degree or not.
…and pardon the sentence typo, it won’t let me edit that.
Pickle – The Invisalign dentist is able to compensate discrepancies and adjust the teeth so that those discrepancies are least visible. Again, I do NOT have a massive case. It is barely noticeable as-in, apart from the teeth themselves being crooked.

Why dont you do all the ortho yourself. You obviously know all about it. Bet you end up with nice straight teeth, and a massive jaw discprenancy, cos your amazing invisilign orthodontist is just going for a quick fix and a fast buck

  • I am looking to purchase individual dental insurance with a $2500 max and no waiting period. Please help.?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

The dental insurance is the most important right now, but I am also in the market for health and vision as well. If there is a way that I can get all 3 for $150 or less a month, that would be great!
As far as the health insurance, a $2500 or less deductible, $30 or less co-pay, must include prescription drug benefit $100 deductible, and yearly female exam.
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

health-quotes.isgreat.org – my family have this health insurance. It is affordable and has good coverage for dental issues.

  • X-Ray before treatment?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

I haven’t been to a dentist for years, over 10 (was agoraphobic) but recently got brave and joined a dental practice.
The dentist said that I needed a filling but no other treatment, he did not X-Ray my mouth at all which I thought was a bit odd.
I have had the filling done today, I know the tooth was in a bad condition as I could feel part of it was broken but I had no discomfort. Now the anaesthetic has worn off it is really starting to ache!
I have looked on the internet and note that it’s quite common for teeth to be sensitive after filling, I’m just concerned that he has drilled and filled the tooth without being exactly sure of how bad it was as there was no X-Ray done.

Is it usual to treat a new patient without doing an X-Ray first?

Thanks

It’s unusual Not to take any X-rays on a New patient, it’s recommend that routine X-rays are taken every 2 years and since you have not been to see a Dentist for Over 10 years I would have expected the Dentist to have taken them.
Dental X-rays help the Dentist identify problems with the Teeth,Mouth and Jaw, they also show Cavities’ hidden dental structures such as Wisdom Teeth and bone loss which cannot be seen by the eye alone during a routine examination!
It’s possible for Tooth Decay and Periodontal problems to be missed during a routine exam and x-rays would help identify any under lying problems that the eye cannot see.
If the dentist has not taken any xrays He will have had no idea how deep the decay has progressed and may have irritated the nerve in the tooth which is why you are now feeling pain, or the filling might be to high and each time you are biting down on the tooth you are putting extra force on the treated tooth!
As a new patient to the surgery X-rays should have been taken to give the dentist a clear over view of your oral health!

  • is the dental hygiene job market good or bad in washington state?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

i want to get an associates in applied sciences, either in radiology or dental hygiene. But, i am confused and discouraged by hearing so many different things about the job market.
If i become a dental hygienist in the next couple of years will i be jobless?
What should i do?
Is the job market in Washington state good or bad for dental hygienists?
Thanks!
Are there any Dental hygienests out there with advice?

Dental hygienists are always needed. If the market is not good in WA in a few years, you can work anywhere. Some travel around and work for several dentists, on a contract basis (1099)

  • Can a company reference a published article but change the information referenced?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

Hypothetically speaking. There is a radio show that airs information to the public. If this radio show airs information and references a published article as it’s source, is it legal for them to change the information in the article that was referenced at their discretion?

If I understand your question, you’re describing something like this. The host of the radio show says "In an article last week, The Happy Times Journal reported that the sky is pink." But what the Happy Times Journal really said is that the sky is blue.

If that’s the case, what the radio station did is not illegal, but the station is guilty of presenting an inaccuracy. If it’s serious enough, the editor of the Happy Times Journal might write a letter to the station manager and ask for a correction, saying that its position was stated incorrectly. If this happens a lot, the station’s listeners will eventually realize that the station, or perhaps this particular host, can’t be trusted. But if it was just a simple mistake, it’s unlikely that anyone would make a big deal about it.
