  • MY 1ST UPPER MOLAR IS CHIPPED! WHAT DO I DO?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

Two-part question: 1. Chipped molar: what will be done? 2. Price: how much am I looking at here?
Okay, the tooth is specifically the "first molar, upper teeth."

I had a root canal done on this tooth more than ten years ago. Metal filling was put in to fill the hole and no crown was placed over it (for whatever reason; don’t ask me now why since I can’t remember back ten years, you animal). I chewed on for years in blissful ignorance.

Tonight, I was eating popcorn and, as usual when eating popcorn, I was chewing on the burnt kernels. I felt like I was biting into something really hard that I couldn’t chew away at like the kernels and I just spit it out. I come to find out that a small piece of tooth chipped off. Size? It’s about the size of three pinheads combined.

Now, none of the filling was included. A closer inspection with a mirror stuck into my mouth revealed the chipped piece of tooth came from the side of the tooth itself.

* 3 years ago

Additional Details
There is now a tiny little hole on the side of this tooth and my tongue is now sometimes scraping against the side of it, which is now pretty sharp. Food getting into the tiny hole is my main concern since I don’t want an infection later on.

So, what now? Simply fill in the hole with filling? A new filling altogether?

Another thing I want to add that may or may not have anything to do with this: the tooth in question is discolored and has been for a few years now. It’s grayish compared to my other teeth and almost a blackish ring exists where the tooth meets the gumline. I’ve also noticed that the metal filling has been eroding little by little over the years. Is this tooth a goner eventually?

Second part of my question: I don’t have dental insurance, so how much am I looking at here to have this chipped tooth fixed? I haven’t been to the dentist in years so I’m freaking out here over what else the dentist is gonna find. He or she will see a patient with no dental insurance that already had five cavities and a root canal and now a chipped tooth and is gonna probably take advantage of my wallet, huh?

Need to look at the exact tooth in question?

Again, it’s the "first molar, upper teeth."

To answer the first part of your question nothing is an emergency. The tooth won’t rot or become sensitive, so there rush. The tooth becomes more brittle after a root canal is done and will chip and break easier. (Almost the same as a dead branch on a tree–it is easier to snap off than a live branch) You can patch in the broken area with a silver or white filling but you must realize that this is only a temporary fix. This will be a lot less expensive than a crown would be. You should really have a crown done as this will return the tooth back to its original strength. The next time it breaks it may not be so little and you could possibly lose the tooth. Good luck with your decision.

  • Is marketing a good field?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

When I say "good field" I mean do students tend to make good money after getting a degree in marketing? I’m already in School for Dental hygiene but I find myself questioning my major all the time. I like it but at the same time I’ve also though about marketing as well. :)

I studied marketing at university and have been practicing over the last 10 years. For me it is an ideal career, its fast paced, its stressful, you will be doing a number activities simultaneously and its highly rewarding. Everyday has been different lots of travelling, meeting new people each day, thinking of new ideas, managing a number of projects, working 24/7. I have had a number of roles within marketing from telemarketer, marketing manager, relationships manager (even though i was never very good at my own), marketing director, accounts manager, marketing consultant, event manager.

I have worked with brands like MICROSOFT, HP, IBM, Cisco, NASA, as well as very small unknown brands which has really added to my repertoire.

All those roles where challenging but where very rewarding now i run my own marketing company. If you are good multi tasker, work well under tight deadlines, have an eye for creativity you will do well. Its definatley a career i would recommend, i have provided some links to give you an idea of marketing is all about, the types of careers, and the education you may need to support that change.

good look with whichever decision or direction you take

best wishes

  • Im writing an article for my school newspaper about what 6th graders miss about elementary. How should i start
    posted by Kris Nickerson

I am writing an article for my middle-school newspaper. HOW SHOULD I START IT????

If you have any other suggestions that I should put in the article that would be be great!

THANKS

You usually try to start your story with a good lead, which usually consists of showing a reader rather then telling your reader. You want to use vivid words and imagination while also being creative. So here’s some examples, and hopefully they lead you to something more creative.

–Remember when Recess was the best part of the day, where hanging out with friends, getting out of class, and being a kid was okay?

–Playing kickball, having holiday themed parties and only having one teacher were parts of daily routines for elementary students. Now, each and every year gaining more responsibility starting with being the lowest in the school, as a sixth grader.

This is a video of my then 7 year old son David in May 2008I had my Flip video camera with me. His mom wasnt able to go becasue of work. I taped some of the morning before the surgery to show her and was already planning to tape afterwards. He had just had a tooth removed due to Hyperdontia or extra tooth. This was taken in the parking lot of the dentist office. He was so out of it. The staff was even laughing. This lasted for a few hours and he was fine. He even laughed at the video that night.

He is very smart and always has something interesting to say about many different issues. His philosophical reaction to the medication didnt really suprise us.

David is a very good kid and I am blessed to have he and his brother William as sons.

This has been a great experience for our family. Thanks for watching.

  • Do I have grounds to sue the Hospital and Doctor. They knocked my crowns out and chipped one of my teeth?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

While it has been my good fortune to find a good Dr. and benefit from his talent as a foot surgeon; I had the unfortunate experience of malpractice, at the hands of the accompanying anesthesiologist. On 3/23/10, I entered a outpatient Medical Clinic with the full expectation of having a second successful foot operation by my Dr. When I regained consciousness after the surgery, it seems I had been entered involuntarily and unsuccessfully into a championship prize fight with Mike Tyson and had my two front permanent crowns knocked out. I’m just kidding about the fight.

The nurse standing beside my bed with a small cup containing my crowns informed me that I had supposedly bit down on the green standard oral airway she had in her other hand. I know this piece of equipment very well, you see I was trained on how to use it as a US Army Medic. I examined it and didn’t see any embedded teeth marks were my teeth would have bit down on it to have caused this type of damage, so I immediately thought that my dentist must have done a lousy job putting these crowns in. She told me they were the best and would last five years. I am Lucky enough to be a Black Jack Pit Boss and a part time SAG Actor, so my two front teeth are very important in my line of work.
So,I got up from the post-op bed, told my friend to take me directly to the dentist office. When I arrived at the dental office minutes later, I gave them the cup of teeth and proceeded to read them the riot act about doing faulty dental work and told the dentist I demanded to have new crowns put in and not one red cent charged to my account.

I must say to her credit, she came back brain cells on full throttle and said lets take a look and sat me in the chair, took x-rays and discovered that my tooth was now chipped and the crowns were not split in half but missing the backs, because the backs were still on the numbs in my mouth. It was explained, if you had bit down, your teeth would be split in half like a cracked sunflower seed. The reason the backs of your crowns are still stuck to the back of your teeth is because they were forcefully pushed in from the front.

I thought what a detective you would make, needless to say I was man enough to stand there and apologized in front of that whole staff. They were gracious enough to give me an out and said your still under the anesthesia, but who wouldn’t be outraged.
My mother( R.N., B.S.N.)was the runner-up oncology nurse of the year three years ago. At her funeral a nurse stepped up to the podium and said, you don’t know me, but I want you to know what kind of a person let alone professional , your mother was; while training me on patient care we were leaving a patients room and mom commended me on technique and then asked me what color was the patients hair. She would always say to us that healing isn’t always in the medicine.

I told the anesthesiologist that my grandfather died at the hands of alcoholic anesthesiologist during a simple tendon repair operation, so I would appreciate it if he would take extra care during the procedure. Obviously, he wasn’t listening.
I have personally spoken to patient relations and Quality Risk Management. When I spoke to Patient Relations originally right after the operation, they relayed the facts about my teeth to Risk Management and they said ,to have me have my dentist forward the bill to her.

As of March 30, 2010,Risk Management has had a change of mind and decided not to pay $2645.00 to replace my permanent crowns. Know I feel like I have been abused and gone way past the point of civility.

I now want $2700.00 for the crown replacement and $4800.00 for the malpractice of chipping my tooth not to mention their corporate arrogance, insensitivity toward me the patient and covering up the Dr.’s false statement. I am going to send a compliant to the medical board of california. I want to know how to file for malpractice on him without a lawyer also.

Personal Injury and Med. Malpractice Lawyers usually don’t charge unless you win the suit, so by all means get a lawyer .
