  • What is the difference between news story and article?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

I have AP government summer homework. We need to find 5 articles spanning the month of July and August. We also need to maintain a journal that contains 3 news stories and a one paragraph opinion on each news story that is also spanning the month of July and August. I just realized that the teacher used different words to describe the assignment. My guess is that news story contains a cluster of related articles that complete a story. And an article is a single piece of journal writing. I really need to know, otherwise I can’t do my homework correctly. Thank you so much for whoever tries to answer appropriately!!

A news story is a piece that is written as the news is developing, a news article is a piece that is written after the story has developed. As an example things written about the raising the budget ceiling prior to the vote, and giving that result are news stories. The stuff written afterwards analysing who won or lost and what the result will be for the country are articles. Some of what was written before the vote were articles if all they did was report on the positions of the various groups in Congress without adding any new details.

  • How much of a raise should I ask for?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

My one year anniversary at my place of work is coming up and I am planning to ask for a one year review. I am unsure how much of a raise I should ask for.

I am a front office clerk at a very busy (9000+ patient) family doctor’s office for 3 physicians. The office staff is small 12 people approx in Ontario, Canada. I make 14.50 per hour and for 37 hours a week with approximately 2.5-3 hrs a week of overtime I am not compensated for. I do not get paid vacation but am allowed to take 2 weeks of holidays/days off. I am on a joint medical/dental/prescription plan where I pay approximately $40 every 2 weeks into the plan and the Doctor’s pay the rest into this plan.

When I originally started (as a recent college grad) I was hired to do photocopying, shredding & scanning of documents with some data entry. Gradually I began to take on more and more tasks including transcription, physician’s assistant (assisting with physical exams, etc.), doing referrals, completing abnormal folders (calling patients with abnormal results), doing back up of the server, random office tasks as they arise, assisting nurses as necessary, and providing administrative to support to the doctor’s and other medical professionals who work out of our office.

After working there for 2 months I was promoted (I use this loosely as I was never given a raise) to work the front desk reception–a job no one else wants because of the incredible level of stress, but I love most of the time. I am responsible for triaging 5 phone lines of calls (approximately 150-200 calls a day), booking appointments, opening mail, faxing reports, typing letters, etc., etc. on a daily basis. On top of these tasks I am routinely responsible for assisting with all of the tasks I did before I was moved to this new position. I feel like I am sometimes doing the work of 2-3 people. In fact I am usually responsibile for more tasks the office manager. I am also the person usually responsible for covering for other people when they are away, because I am the only person famillar with every job in the office; even the office manager has no idea how to do half of the jobs I usually take on and she comes to me to help out with these tasks when the regular person is gone. I have gone above and beyond my regular duties, I have even helped out with computer/tech support saving the office hundreds of dollars by doing the work myself rather than calling in the usual service. I amaze everyone with what I can do there and have been recently called a jane-of-all-trades.

I get along well with everyone and am always willing to help where I can, but do not feel like I am being compensated accordingly. I want to ask for a fair wage but am unsure if I should ask for a dollar amount as in I want to make 16 or 17 dollars an hour, or if I should ask for a percentage. If I should ask for a percentage how much should I ask for…asking for 3-5% seems to be very little (around $1), but asking for 10-15% sounds like it is asking for too much. Or should I just what and see what they offer me. I know I am invaluable to this company and have been told this by many employees who have been there much longer than me, but have heard from other’s that they doctor’s do not usually give raises to people too often even those who are deserving.

I have an appointment scheduled next week to meet with them and plan to outline how much work I do at this point. If I do not get a significant raise I think I am going to start looking for another job where I will be respected for the work I do. Please help me come up with the best way to get what I want without having to leave.

Sorry I rambled on for so long. :)

It sounds like you are a valuable employee and deserve a raise since you have assumed many new job responsibilities. I would think they should give you a "minimum" of a dollar more an hour but doctors are usually out of touch with the business side of their operations. I know you said you have a degree but you can’t use that too much as a lever since it is not a requirement for medical administration positions. Find out what other offices are paying for similar positions so you can support your position. Good Luck

  • I got a tarot card reading, and it was completely accurate?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

So, she said a few things that completely hit home. #1 she said I was in a relationship and put everything I had into that relationship, and I haven’t been the same since, I constantly doubt love and push it away, and I over analyze things. #2 Someone who has passed away is following me, giving me signs of my future, this person would be my grandpa. #3 I’m a guardian angel, I’m a natural caregiver and I have a really big heart, I tend to care more about others than myself.

I was in a relationship a few years ago, he was my first love, and I put everything I had into this relationship and it didn’t work out, I haven’t been in a relationship. This relationship changed me quite a bit, I’ve been angry ever since.

My grandpa died 5 years ago, before I knew I wanted to be a dentist. Recently I found a folder from 5th grade with all my projects, it had an essay in it that was called "how to brush a cats teeth". Well, I’m a dental assistant, and going to school to be a dental assistant. I also found recently one of my baby teeth in this drawer that I haven’t used since I moved, it was emptied out last august and I haven’t used it, and I found my baby tooth in a case sitting in the middle of the drawer. She said I would see clues and premonitions of my future and I had to listen closely because my grandpa was trying to send me messages about my future.

I never believed in any of this stuff, but I’m wondering, how could someone I’ve never met have so many accurate things to say? I’ve been thinking about going back for a second reading.
I haven’t been in a relationship since** second paragraph, second sentence.
Third paragraph fourth sentence, I’m going to school to be a dentist, I’m already a dental assistant. Sorry for Errors. And if it’s unclear, I’m asking if tarot cards are accurate or if they’re just accurate by chance?
How about you answer my question instead of being completely judgmental and rude.

A lot of that stuff is just a really good psychologist taking what you are giving her and turning it around to sound like a prophesy. Even if you don’t realize it, you are constantly giving her information, and she just pays attention to those that seem most important. Also, being vague does well for a psychic. I wasn’t there for the reading, but I would say that she probably didn’t put a name or relationship to whoever it was that died. As for finding the tooth, I do not know all the details, but I am not one to simply say that the spirit of your grandfather put it there for you to find. But finding the essay seems much more coincidental than actually having a purpose. If I went through my childhood homework pieces, I would undoubtedly find several essays about animals, or professing my love for animals, etc. I still do, and I was going to school to become a veterinarian. It doesn’t mean I should still pursue that course of study, as I am not a good student, and I would not survive the rigorousness of the courses.

All in all, I would say that you spoke to someone that is good at reading people, and afterwards you saw coincidences and mistook them for meaningful prophecies. Nothing to be ashamed of, but it’s definitely not something to be taken seriously.

Tarot cards are seemingly accurate because they are vague and are surrounded by psychology.

  • How long before a moved Wikipedia article is under the changed name on Google?
    posted by Kris Nickerson

After you move a wikipedia article (change the title of it), how long does it take for the article title to appear modified when you search for it on Google and other search engines? I’ve already redirected the past titles of the article to the new, moved page. Thanks for the help. :)

It depends on a variety of factors, including how many incoming links there are to the original article (if any), whether or not Google Analytics is used on pages making those links, and how well the Google web-crawlers are performing that day. There’s also some randomness and luck involved. It usually takes no more than 48 hours, but we’ve heard of it happening in as little as 30 minutes.
